Diaz-Balart Successfully Takes Transportation, Treasury and Housing Fiscal Year 2006 Appropriations Legislation to the Floor of the House of Representatives

November 19th, 2005 - Washington - As the Vice-Chairman of the House Rules Committee, Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) yesterday took the Fiscal Year 2006 Departments of Transportation, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development, The Judiciary, District Of Columbia, and Independent Agencies Appropriations Conference Report (H.Res.565) to the Floor of the House of Representatives. The bill was passed by the full House.

H. Res. 565 includes almost $37 billion in funds for the highway system, representing an increase of $1.6 billion. In addition, the Department of Housing and Urban Development is funded at $34 billion, an increase of $2.1 billion dollars. These funds will permit the Department to administer programs that assist the public with their housing needs, economic and community development and fair housing opportunities.

In this legislation, Congressman Diaz-Balart successfully secured funding for South Florida priorities, including: $1,000,000 for Runway Strengthening for Miami International Airport; $1,000,000 for the Broward County Southwest Bus Facility; $500,000 for Centro Mater Head Start Facilities; $250,000 for the Miami-Dade College Hialeah Campus Library; and $100,000 to replace the hurricane shelter for the City of Miami Springs.

"This bill is fiscally sound and represents our commitment to provide the necessary resources for vital programs and projects across the Nation," said Congressman Diaz-Balart. "From funding critical infrastructure projects to allocating resources, to assisting 30,000 residents in Miami-Dade with their housing needs, this legislation provides essential funding for important projects throughout South Florida."
