Pappas Condemns HHS Rule Allowing Foster Care and Adoption Discrimination

Statement

Date: Nov. 21, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Chris Pappas (D-NH), who serves as a Co-Chair of the Equality Caucus, issued the following statement after the Department of Health and Human Services published its rule allowing taxpayer-funded foster care and adoption agencies to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and marital status.

"The Trump Administration's decision to allow taxpayer-funded discrimination against loving parents because of who they are or how they identify is a backward policy founded on ignorance and hate," said Congressman Pappas. "The Department of Health and Human Services should remain focused on placing kids in safe, loving homes and not on enacting discriminatory policies."

HHS administers more than $500 billion in grants for foster care, Head Start, HIV prevention, community health care centers, and energy assistance. This ruling strips protections previously put in place to ensure no one gets turned away, denied services, or treated differently based on their sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
