Press Release

Date: Nov. 26, 2019
Location: Omaha, NE

Ahead of Thanksgiving Day, U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) released a video expressing her gratitude for the people of Nebraska and the character they displayed through the challenges and crises that affected the lives and communities of Nebraska in 2019.

"Through all the disaster and tragedy, Nebraskans responded with kindness, bravery, and generosity. Adversity doesn't break us. Instead, it reveals our character, grit, and determination," Senator Fischer said in the video.

Full video transcript:

It is that time of year where we all gather with our friends and family to reflect on what we are thankful for.

As we enjoy our food, football, and family traditions, Nebraskans are thinking about what a tough year it has been for many of our communities.

This spring, portions of our state were hit with record-setting floods that destroyed many of our homes, business, and farmland.

At the same time out West, extreme blizzard conditions created significant challenges for farmers and ranchers in that area.

Generations of farmland was destroyed, bridges collapsed, and entire towns were cut off from the rest of the state.

Later in the year our state was hit with more flooding, an irrigation tunnel collapse that affected the Panhandle, and a fire at a Kansas meat processing plant that shook the beef market.

But through all the disaster and tragedy Nebraskans responded with kindness, bravery, and generosity.

Adversity doesn't break us. Instead, it reveals our character, grit, and determination.

When the Platte River overflowed, turning Fremont, Nebraska, into an island, Nebraska pilots joined together to fly in supplies and emergency aid.

In the Cortland area, a member of the community died unexpectedly, and his friends and farmers in the area came out with their combines and grain carts to harvest the fields for his family.

And even with everything going on in 2019 in Nebraska, when other parts of the country needed help, Nebraskans were fast to act.

In August, members of Nebraska Task Force One went to Florida to help with Hurricane Dorian relief efforts.

And recently firefighters with Gering Fire Department went out to California to help contain the wild fires.

Through crises and challenging times, Nebraskans will always help one another, persevere, and overcome.

This Thanksgiving, I cannot express enough how grateful I am for the character and kind hearts of Nebraskans. I am filled with pride to have the opportunity to work for you in the United States Senate.

I wish you all a happy and wonderful Thanksgiving.
