Scalise's Whip Group Ready to Get Usmca Over Finish Line

Statement

Date: Dec. 10, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Trade

Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement upon news of an official agreement on USMCA:

"Passing the United States--Mexico--Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade deal will be a major boost for our economy, and will provide more than 160,000 new jobs, which is a huge win for American workers. For months, House Republicans pushed vigorously for a final deal on USMCA while Speaker Pelosi wasted time and resources on her sham impeachment inquiry.

"I predict an overwhelming vote for this agreement, and my USMCA Whip Team is engaged and ready to push this important trade agreement over the finish line as soon as it is scheduled for the House Floor. Republican support for President Trump's hard-negotiated trade deal will be strong. Every day we delay this vote only costs us more jobs, better ability to sell American products into neighboring countries, and a stronger economy.

"President Trump, in particular, deserves tremendous credit for his dedication to delivering results for American families. U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Robert Lighthizer also deserves credit for his relentless determination and patience to get USMCA done.

"I also want to thank Rep. Kevin Brady, Republican leader of the House Ways and Means Committee, for his hard work in negotiating important details and answering all the questions our colleagues had about this historic agreement.

"Once USMCA is ratified, we can continue working to get better trade deals with other friends around the world who have already recognized that their economies will also benefit if they treat America more fairly in our outdated trade deals."
