Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Transportation

Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.), senior member of the Senate Commerce Committee, released the following statement on the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)'s report and concluding recommendations on the engine failure that occurred on a Boeing 737 NG, Southwest Airlines (SWA) flight 1380, on April 17, 2018. The resulting explosion caused the tragic death of Jennifer Riordan, a member of the Albuquerque community.

"Jennifer Riordan's family -- and the entire Albuquerque community -- continue to mourn her tragic loss. I am heartened that the NTSB responded by conducting a thorough review of what occurred on Southwest Flight 1380 and came up with action items to save future lives. I urge the FAA, Boeing, and Southwest Airlines to act swiftly on the recommendations from this report. Every passenger who sets foot on an airplane should be able to feel confident that the government, aircraft manufacturers, and the airlines have done everything in their power to establish and implement strong safety standards."
