Wexton Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance

On Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual observance that honors the lives of those who have been murdered in acts of anti-transgender violence, Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) issued the following statement.
"Today we honor the memory of all those who have been victims of fatal anti-transgender violence -- who have been targeted for no other reason than how they identify.

"Despite the significant progress we've made as a country in the past decade to advance LGBTQ rights, transgender Americans, particularly transgender women of color, still face alarming rates of violence.

"The Trump administration has demonstrated a determination to erase the transgender community. By codifying bigotry through executive actions, the administration's efforts fuel and encourage violence against the transgender community.

"When we consider what can be done to end the epidemic of anti-trans violence, we must work to pass laws that will protect the rights of transgender people, but it is also incumbent on each of us to speak out -- clearly and unequivocally -- against hatred and bigotry wherever we see it in order to build safer, more inclusive communities.

"My thoughts are with the friends and family of those we've lost. In Congress, I will keep fighting to ensure equal rights and protections under the law for all Americans."
