Graves, Google Host Internet Safety Event at Sammy McClure Middle School

Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-14) joined representatives from Google today for an Internet safety presentation at Sammy McClure Middle School. Google's Online Safety Roadshow: How to Be Internet Awesome teaches middle school students how to be smart and safe when sharing content and communicating online. It focuses on important skills like how to create a safe and memorable password, identify phishing scams, and more. Rep. Graves kicked off the event and participated in the password faceoff challenge, where students are asked to come up with strong passwords to keep their profiles and data safe online.

"Today's students are more connected than ever, and as a Dad to three kids I know how important it is to make sure every click, tweet, and post is done responsibly. When it comes to being cyber secure, we can all be doing more to keep ourselves safe online. I'm grateful to the team at Google and thank the students and teachers at Sammy McClure Middle School for learning with us today," said Rep. Graves.

"With students having greater access to the Internet through cell phones, tablets and other devices, it is important that they learn to use these tools responsibly," said Jamie Hill, a Google spokesperson. "The Online Safety Roadshow: How to Be Internet Awesome teaches students how to be smart and safe online in today's interconnected world."

Topics covered during the event included: sharing with care, setting strong passwords, using settings on different websites and apps, identifying online scams, and being kind online. Earlier this month, Rep. Graves launched a new cybersecurity page on his website, at tomgraves.house.gov/cyber. The page includes tips for keeping yourself safe online, and features videos of Rep. Graves answering questions from Northwest Georgia residents about cybersecurity.

About the Google Online Safety Roadshow: How to be Internet Awesome

The Google-led program educates students about what you can do to stay safe and secure online. The program was created in partnership with principals and child safety groups to develop a digital literacy assembly that could be shared across the country.
