Rose Fights for Fairness in Speaker Pelosi's Sham Impeachment Process

Statement

Date: Oct. 30, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative John Rose (TN-6) filed legislation combating the unfair, sham impeachment process proposed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"Speaker Pelosi has yet again betrayed the American people by championing policy that would move away from historic precedent and enact unique constraints on Members in the minority during an impeachment inquiry," Rep. Rose stated. "In the Clinton impeachment inquiry resolution, House Republicans provided strong, bipartisan checks and balances regarding unilateral subpoena authority. House Democrats' resolution clearly demonstrates their refusal to conduct a fair process involving Members in the majority and in the minority. Their resolution sends a strong message: Speaker Nancy Pelosi believes House Democrats are above our country's historic precedent, and the Speaker is not demonstrating a good-faith effort to include House Republicans in this critical process."

Rep. John Rose introduced his legislation to provide for bipartisan subpoena authority on October 30, 2019. His legislation mirrors the exact language authorized by the House in the Clinton impeachment inquiry, which also mirrored the Nixon impeachment inquiry language. It would bring fairness to the sham "Pelosi impeachment" process, which House Democrats' H. Res. 660 seeks to formalize.

House Democrats' H. Res. 660 provides for the following changes to historic precedent:

-Removes Ranking Minority Members' co-equal subpoena power.
-Minority Members lose the right to refer to the committee questions on whether subpoenas can be exercised unilaterally by the Chairman.

"I am proud to introduce legislation that would restore integrity to this process, unlike the kangaroo court Speaker Pelosi seeks to formalize," Rep. Rose continued. "If we do not correct Speaker Pelosi's decision to treat Members in the minority unequally, this impeachment inquiry is sure to continue in the same unfair manner as the hearings of the last several weeks, which have completely lacked transparency. If the House proceeds with the "Pelosi impeachment' standard, the clear framework would be in place to make what was once rare over the course of our country's history - the impeachment of a president - the new norm."
