Issues: Education

"New York State Regent Judith Johnson was a revered leader and visionary who worked tirelessly throughout her seven decades of outstanding public service to improve educational equity and excellence for all children, throughout New York State and our nation.

"Whether as a skilled administrator in public school districts throughout the Lower Hudson Valley; an innovative assistant secretary of education in the second Clinton Administration in Washington, D.C., or most recently, a dedicated member of the New York State Board of Regents, Judith Johnson focused on expanding educational opportunities for students of all racial and economic backgrounds.

"As a young girl growing up in a Brooklyn housing project, Judith saw first-hand the importance of educational opportunities. She would later tell audiences all over the country that her professional success was determined early on by her selection for a public elementary school gifted program that put her on the path to college and advanced degrees.

"Throughout her career as a school administrator, Judith frequently was a trailblazer as the first African-American woman to hold high-ranking positions. She generously gave of her time and talents as a mentor and advisor to many.

"There was no stronger advocate for educational opportunity for all children than Judith Johnson, and I was fortunate to call her a friend and advisor.

"We all mourn her passing and should honor her legacy by committing to carrying on her life's work of giving every child the opportunity to succeed."
