Engel statement on Supreme Court permitting Sandy Hook parents lawsuit against gun manufacturer

Statement

Date: Nov. 12, 2019

Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's decision to allow the parents of children killed in the Sandy Hook massacre to sue Remington Arms Company in Remington Arms Co. V. Soto:

"Ever since that awful day in 2012, the parents of Sandy Hook Elementary have not received the justice they so desperately deserve. But now, with the Supreme Court's decision to allow the Sandy Hook parents' lawsuit against the Remington Arms Company to move forward, these aggrieved families will finally have their day in court.

"SCOTUS' decision tests the limits of a 2005 law that I voted against which protects gun manufacturers from lawsuits. It's a shameful law that should be overturned, but for now we will take this win and continue our march toward justice. I stand with the parents of Newtown, and hope they prevail in their suit against the gun manufacturer."
