Statement on House Vote Recognizing the Armenian Genocide

Statement

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, today voted in favor of H. Res. 296, affirming the United States record on the Armenian Genocide. It passed the U.S. House by a vote of 405-11, with 3 voting present.

"As a Jewish American I have a greater obligation to speak out against genocide and oppression. We can never forget the genocide of the Armenian people that resulted in the death of 1.5 million at the hands of the Ottoman government. We must continue to educate the world about the first genocide of the 20th century. Passage of the Armenian Genocide Resolution, H.Res.296, today is an important step forward.

"With modern Turkey conducting ethnic cleansing in real time, and hate crimes rising at home and abroad, the Congress owes it to the American people, and the world, to speak out against all crimes against humanity."
