ICYMI: Rep. Austin Scott fights for transparency in Trump impeachment inquiry

Press Release

Date: Oct. 23, 2019

Last night, Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08) spoke on the House Floor fighting for transparency in the proceedings of the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.

For weeks, Congressman Adam Schiff (CA-28), Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has held hearings and depositions related to the inquiry behind closed doors, leaving millions of Americans and Members of the House of Representatives in the dark.

During a House Intelligence Committee Hearing on September 26th, Chairman Schiff read a fabricated call transcript between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Following this event, Congressman Scott supported a motion sponsored by Congressman Andy Biggs (AZ-05) to censure Chairman Schiff for his reckless actions and misleading the American public. House Democrats blocked that motion on the House Floor Monday evening.

Below are Rep. Scott's remarks as prepared:

"House Democrats and the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee seem to think that impeachment is nothing but a game of if you can't beat him, cheat him.

"On September 26, the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee fabricated and read on-the-record during a Committee hearing a fake call transcript between the President of the United States and a foreign leader, while keeping the actual transcript of the call in a vault.

"And now, he continues to conduct an impeachment inquiry against the President in complete secrecy, leaving the American people and many Members of this body in complete darkness.

"What we have here is a good ole case of "if you can't beat him, cheat him' with gameshow host Chairman Schiff.

"Behind door number one: The Mueller investigation, which found there was no collusion between the President's campaign and Russia.

"Behind door number two: The call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky, which the transcript released by the White House shows no "quid pro quo' and which stemmed from a whistleblower Chairman Schiff orchestrated with in advance and advised on how to proceed with their complaint.

"Behind door number three? Who knows. But the most unbelievable part of all of this is the press' support of Chairman Schiff keeping unclassified documents and hearings that should be open to the public in a vault for no one to see or examine.

"This sham attack on our democracy must be stopped.

"I yield the remainder of my time."
