Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the Senate passed the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, which Rep. Lieu cosponsored in the House. The PACT Act criminalizes the acts of animals being crushed, burned, drowned, suffocated, impaled, or subjected to other forms of cruelty as they affect interstate trade or foreign commerce. The PACT Act is now expected to be signed into law.

"Throughout my career, I have fought to protect animals from mistreatment, abuse, and cruelty," Rep. Lieu said. "The PACT Act demonstrates how seriously we take animal abuse and allows the federal government to prosecute extreme cases of animal cruelty. As a proud member of the bipartisan Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, I applaud the Senate for passing this bill and look forward to seeing it signed into law."
