POMEROY REACTS TO FIRING OF AMTRAK PRESIDENT
Wednesday, November 09, 2005

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) reacted today to the firing of Amtrak President David Gunn by the rail carrier's board of directors:

"David Gunn has been a forceful advocate for national passenger rail service during his time at Amtrak. He has traveled on the Empire Builder across North Dakota and understands first-hand how important Amtrak is to the communities it serves across our state. This move by the Amtrak board is a sad omen for the future and calls into question their commitment to a nationwide rail system," said Pomeroy.

In North Dakota, Amtrak provides daily service to seven cities on its Empire Builder line serving over 89,000 North Dakotans per year. The Empire Builder runs from Chicago to Seattle and provides a vitally important transportation link for those small communities that do not have airline service.
