Crist Statement on House Resolution Condemning Armenian Genocide

Statement

Date: Oct. 29, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D-St. Petersburg) released the following statement on passage of H.Res 296, "Affirming the United States Record on the Armenian Genocide." The resolution declares the United States' recognition of the Armenian Genocide of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, and commemorates those lives lost, while rejecting Turkish efforts to deny the existence of the Armenian Genocide.

"Today is an important day for America's Armenian community and for Armenians all over the world. Over one million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923 -- that history is clear," said Rep. Crist. "While the facts may be embarrassing or inconvenient for the Republic of Turkey, continued denial of the Armenian Genocide is incorrect, illegitimate, and an affront to the Armenian people. As a proud cosponsor of this resolution, I commend the People's House for speaking with forceful moral clarity on this issue. We solemnly remember and honor the victims of the Armenian Genocide, to help survivors heal and to help prevent future atrocities."
