Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-6) issued the following statement on the announcement that Sacramento would be home to the newest Major League Soccer (MLS) Franchise.

"In Sacramento, we take our sports seriously, and Republic FC and its fans embody passion, energy, and civic pride for our great city. Securing a MLS franchise is a monumental accomplishment for the City of Sacramento and our region -- signaling our continued growth and emergence as a great American city," said Congresswoman Matsui. "In times both good and bad, sports connect us to one another and to the city we know and love. The collective spirit and support for Republic FC lifts our entire region up, and I cannot be happier for the people of Sacramento and Republic FC. I thank Mayor Darrell Steinberg and the City of Sacramento for being an exceptional local partner, MLS Commissioner Don Garber for believing in our fans, the ownership team -- Ron Burkle, Matt Alvarez, and Kevin Nagle -- for realizing this dream and making it a reality, and everyone at Republic FC who helped successfully secure the team's place in the MLS. I also want to congratulate Warren Smith and Joe Wagoner for their founding vision and work to build Republic FC into the team it is today."
