Matsui Statement on the Passing of Elijah Cummings

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-6) issued the following statement after the passing of Congressman Elijah Cummings, Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.

"I am heartbroken by the loss of my esteemed colleague and friend, Elijah Cummings. Elijah was a leader for the Committee on Oversight and Reform, our party, and our country," said Congresswoman Matsui. "At a moment in our history with the truth too often obscured, Elijah relentlessly pursued it and worked to shine a light on injustice in our society. While known as a champion for equality and a fighter who unwaveringly spoke truth to power, I will always also remember him for his compassion and kindness. It was his humanity that defined him. I will be forever grateful for his friendship and support in passing the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act into law -- the first piece of legislation designed to improve the safety and security of passengers aboard cruise ships. My thoughts and prayers are with the Cummings family. He will be truly missed."
