Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on the passing of Chairman Elijah E. Cummings

Statement

Date: Oct. 17, 2019

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement after the passing of U.S. Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, the chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform:

"Our nation has lost a true warrior. In all of his work, Elijah Cummings used his voice to defend our democracy and champion justice for others. Elijah could roar like a lion, bringing moral clarity and a voice of reason to today's political discourse.

"For the people of my hometown of Flint, Elijah always stood tall. Elijah was one of the first Members of Congress to visit Flint, afterward opening an investigation into the water crisis. I will always remember working side-by-side with Elijah to bring much-needed resources and justice to the people of Flint.

"We have lost our dear friend and colleague Elijah far too soon. It was an honor to serve with Elijah in Congress, a man who served every day with integrity, conviction and compassion. My thoughts are with Elijah's family and constituents during this very difficult time."
