Hoyer Statement on September Jobs Report

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for September:

"The September jobs report tells a story with which we are familiar: steady but disappointing job gains that mask deeply rooted economic challenges. It also underscores that the Trump Administration has not kept its promises to focus on the economy and help working people get ahead. Instead, through mismanagement and corruption at the highest levels, the Trump Administration has exacerbated our most pressing challenges and made it harder for Americans to secure a place in the middle class. Trade wars and uncertainty have led to a contraction in manufacturing and a drop in consumer confidence. Wages fell for the first month in almost two years and the year-over-year change was the slowest in a year.

"Democrats, however, believe there is a better way forward. We continue to deliver on our For The People agenda by passing legislation to expand economic opportunity, raise wages, lower health care and prescription drug costs, and lift millions out of poverty. We are also working to address drivers of uncertainty, such as ensuring the government is responsibly funded on time. I urge the Senate GOP to partner with us in this work to strengthen our economy and ensure that everyone in this country can make it in America."
