Dear Administrator Dickson:

I write to you regarding the recent arrest of an airline employee who is being accused of attempted sabotage of a flight departing from Miami International Airport to the Bahamas. This security breach is deeply concerning to me and to all travelers across the nation.

The safety of American families is my top priority. Last year alone, more than 126 million visitors traveled to Florida, with nearly 94 million of those visitors coming through one of our 18 airports. It is paramount that these visitors, and the families in Florida, are safe when using air travel. As Governor of Florida, I made sure our airports and airlines had the resources they needed to operate safely and efficiently. Now, as a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, I will continue fighting to make sure the federal government addresses these priorities.

I am requesting that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provide information regarding the certification and regular oversight of mechanics who are permitted to service commercial airlines at our nation's airports. Further, what protocols will you put in place to prevent this type of lapse from occurring again in the future? I know the FAA is focused on ensuring the safety of all of our travelers, and I plan to work with you to address any concerns.
