Cummings Issues Statement in Support of Energy and Commerce Committee Hearing on Bills to Combat Skyrocketing Prescription Drug Prices

Statement

Date: Sept. 25, 2019
Location: Washington D.C.

Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement in support of today's hearing in the Committee on Energy and Commerce on several bills to combat the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs, including Chairman Cummings' bill, H.R. 448, the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Act:

"I am deeply appreciative that the Committee on Energy and Commerce is considering my bill to combat the actions of drug companies and the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs. I personally handed my bill to President Trump in the Oval Office more than two years ago, but it has been radio silence ever since. Lowering prescription drug prices for American families has been my top priority for years, and it was the very first issue the Oversight Committee took up this Congress. Drug companies are reaping astronomical profits off of the backs of millions of American families, forcing people to make impossible choices, to sacrifice their health, and to jeopardize their lives. It's time to end this abuse and pass this landmark legislation to lower drug prices now. I applaud Speaker Pelosi, Chairman Pallone, and Chairwoman Eshoo for moving forward today on this critical issue."
