Congressman Boyle and Chairman Larson Host Congressional Hearing on Social Security in Philadelphia

Today, Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-13) and Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John Larson (CT-01) hosted a district hearing at Temple University to discuss the importance of Social Security and the policy challenges surrounding the program. The district hearing also discussed legislation aimed at improving the program, including the Social Security 2100 Act, H.R. 860, which was introduced by Chairman Larson earlier this year. The bill seeks to increase benefits for Social Security recipients while cutting taxes for nearly 12 million seniors nationwide.

Among many advocates from local and regional organizations who joined today's district hearing, Congressman Boyle and Chairman Larson were joined by three witnesses consisting of Max Richtman, J.D., President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare; Minister Rodney Muhammad, President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Chapter of Philadelphia; and Jacqueline Simon, Public Policy Director of the American Federation of Government Employees.

"Social Security is a promise made to American workers that they would be respected in retirement," said Congressman Boyle. "Seniors have spent their entire lives working to keep our economy strong and to protect our nation because of this promise. That is why I am proud to have welcomed Chairman Larson to our event in Philadelphia to make sure Social Security is expanded and strengthened--not privatized or weakened."

"Social Security is a lifeline for millions of Americans, that's why we need to work to strengthen and enhance it. I'm glad I was able to join Congressman Boyle today to discuss our bill, the Social Security 2100 Act, and the importance of Social Security to Americans in Philadelphia and across the country," said Chairman Larson.

Congressman Boyle sits on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and was appointed to the Social Security Subcommittee, the Oversight Subcommittee, and the Select Revenue Subcommittee.
