Costa Condemns Trump's Attempts to Rollback California Emission Standards, Vows to Fight Administration

Statement

Date: Sept. 18, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration's announcement that it will be revoking California's right to set its own vehicle emissions standards:

"This is just another egregious attempt by the president to punish California," said Costa. "No one asked for this change, no one wants this change, and this change does nothing to help improve the air quality in the Valley. Our air quality presents many challenges that we are continuously working to overcome. It endangers the lives of our citizens and exacerbates the climate crisis. I've led efforts to address these issues, such as creating the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District and paving the way for cleaner transportation alternatives.

"California should not be penalized for leading the charge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Today, I joined my colleagues in cosponsoring a resolution to defend the right of States to set their own vehicle emission standards under the Clean Air Act. Nothing is more fundamental than the air we breathe, and I will continue to fight any attempts from this Administration to hinder our ability to improve our air quality."
