Statement

Date: Sept. 18, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

U.S. Representative Filemon Vela (TX-34) has been appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to serve on the conference committee tasked with producing a final Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Congressman Vela joined the Armed Services Committee when the 116th Congress convened in January and participated in the drafting and House passage of the NDAA, annual legislation which sets military funding and policy for the upcoming fiscal year.

"This appointment ensures that I will have a seat at the table during direct negotiations between the House and Senate leaders on issues that impact our global security. At a time when the Administration is threatening military action what could lead to a new war in the Middle East and we are negotiating the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan after 18 years of combat operations, the National Defense Authorization Act is the main vehicle by which Congress can direct national security policy," said Congressman Vela. "I am honored to be selected to serve on the powerful NDAA conference committee, where I will continue to highlight the strategic importance of Naval Air Station Kingsville, Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, and Corpus Christi Army Depot to the defense of our nation. As a conferee, I will be in a position to advocate for military members to ensure that they have the facilities, technology, equipment, and resources they need to achieve their mission."
