Gianforte Urges Top Trade Official to Advance Montana Wheat in Japan Deal

Statement

Date: Sept. 10, 2019

Congressman Greg Gianforte today urged U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to advance provisions in a trade deal with Japan that boosts Montana wheat.

"I urge you to prioritize securing equitable market access for wheat with Japan," Gianforte wrote in a letter to Ambassador Lighhizer. "This is a matter of urgency for Montana's farmers and an opportunity to maintain America's agriculture domination."

Gianforte highlighted how Japan is the top destination for Montana-grown wheat. He also emphasized how a formal agreement will provide farmers with greater certainty and security against competition from Canada and Australia.

Gianforte detailed how ag provisions negotiated in the Trans-Pacific Partnership benefited Montana's farmers, and asked Lighthizer to include those provisions in any bilateral trade agreement with Japan.
