Congressman Steven Horsford Secures Funding for Minority-Serving Institutions with FUTURE Act

Statement

Date: Sept. 17, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

On Tuesday, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) voted in favor of reauthorizing vital Title III mandatory funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) and other Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). The bill was passed unanimously through the House.

"Colleges and universities geared toward serving students of color are vital to creating safe campus spaces that advance academic success and foster talent growth. Funding these institutions where all can thrive academically moves our country closer to closing education gaps in the United States," Congressman Horsford said. "HBCUs, HSIs, TCUS, and MSIs provide access to quality higher education for millions of students of color and low-income students--we must do everything in our power to allow these institutions to succeed."

The FUTURE Act is the number one priority of MSIs, which educate nearly 30 percent of all undergraduate students. These funds will strengthen the ability of these institutions to serve low-income students, particularly those with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professions.

The FUTURE Act reauthorizes $255 million in critical funding for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) for the next two years, including $85 million for HBCUs. This legislation will improve the self-sufficiency of HBCUs, Tribal Colleges, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and others while strengthening their ability to serve low-income students. Without reauthorization, this funding would have expired on September 30, 2019.
