House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) has announced the House Judiciary Committee will return to Washington before the end of the Congressional District work period to address the issue of gun violence prevention. On September 4, 2019 at 10:00 am, the House Judiciary Committee will mark up a series of bills to help respond to the growing problem of gun violence -- H.R. 1186, the Keep Americans Safe Act; H.R. 1236, the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019, amended to also include provisions from H.R. 3076, the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act; and H.R. 2708, the Disarm Hate Act. In addition, on September 25, 2019, the Committee will hold a hearing on military-style assault weapons. House Judiciary Committee Member Sylvia R. Garcia (D-TX) released the following statement: "We've had enough thoughts and prayers to end gun violence. Now is the time for action. I applaud Chairman Nadler for bringing us back to Washington early so we can help move boldly to end gun violence in America. I support the bills our committee will markup before the whole House returns.

"House Democrats will continue to take steps toward ending the epidemic of gun deaths in America. It's been more than 160 days since the House passed bipartisan legislation to strengthen background checks. Unfortunately, the Senate, under Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to act. Enough is enough! The Senate must act now.

"Once we have taken these first steps, we must address how we can get weapons of war off our streets. Our country is ready to ban military-style assault weapons."
