Expanded Paid Family Leave for Feds

Press Release

Date: July 22, 2019

Great news for Marianas residents who work for the federal government. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 (H.R. 2500) provides paid family leave for federal employees--a new benefit and long-overdue. The House passed the bill on Friday, July 12. It guarantees up to 12 weeks of paid leave for federal employees for the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child; to recover from a serious health condition; to care for a family member suffering from a serious health condition; and for urgent needs created from a family member's call to active military duty. The new policy replaces the current patchwork of benefits that federal employees have to take sick, maternity, or paternity leave. The House bill must now be reconciled with the Senate's National Defense Authorization Act, S. 1790, which passed on June 27.
