Statement from Rep. Peter Defazio on President Trump's planned ICE raids

Statement

Date: July 12, 2019
Issues: Immigration

Rep. Peter DeFazio today released the following statement condemning President Trump's cruel and unnecessary planned deportation raids this weekend:

"The Trump administration's plans to execute massive raids across the country are nothing more than an assault on vulnerable immigrant children and families, many whose only crime is being here in this country without proper documentation. These cruel tactics will likely destroy families, ruin lives, and tear apart communities.

I am in full support of detaining those who pose a threat to our communities, such as violent criminals, drug traffickers, and others. There's also no doubt the U.S. needs to finally execute thoughtful, meaningful, and comprehensive immigration reform.

However, I am appalled by accounts like those I heard last week at Eugene's Immigrant Justice, End Child Detention Rally, including the account from a woman whose law-abiding husband, who has lived in the U.S. for more than a decade, was handcuffed and arrested in his driveway on his way to work.

The Trump Administration's treatment of not only detained individuals but also immigrants living in the U.S. is in direct conflict with our shared values as Americans. I condemn this administration's cruel immigration policies and urge President Trump to end this shameful chapter in our nation's history and work towards peaceful, bipartisan solutions to this crisis."
