Rep. Susie Lee Visits Southern Border with Bipartisan Group of Lawmakers

Statement

Date: July 20, 2019
Location: McAllen, TX
Issues: Immigration

Yesterday, Rep. Susie Lee (NV-03) visited the United States-Mexico border in McAllen, Texas with the Problem Solvers Caucus, a bipartisan group of members of Congress. The trip's purpose was to see first hand the challenges America is facing at the southern border, and find smart, effective solutions to solve those problems.

Rep. Lee released the following statement:

"I came away from this trip acutely aware of how broken our immigration policy is. I also came away with a commitment to be part of the answer to fix our broken immigration system. The men, women, and children in custody put themselves at incredible risk to escape violence, aren't sure what their future holds, and are being held in poor conditions. Yet, I could still see hope in their eyes. It made me understand more than ever that we must come together to find a solution to help them and fix our immigration system.

It is clear that we have not invested enough in the security of our border or the safety of those legally trying to immigrate to our country. I saw firsthand the challenges facing Customs and Border Protection Officers. If we're going to fix our broken immigration system, we need a comprehensive solution that ensures both a fair pathway to legal citizenship for immigrants and resources for border security and enforcement.

There is no single problem and no single solution to solving the challenges we're facing, which makes it more clear than ever: we need comprehensive immigration reform. That means more resources to process asylum claims more efficiently, more immigration judges and social workers, and investment in border security infrastructure and personnel to prevent people from illegally taking advantage of our immigration system.

We cannot allow politics to prevent progress in reforming our immigration system, and that's why a bipartisan effort is the only way forward. I am confident that we will work together and do what our caucus's name says and solve this problem."
