Rogers Statement on Third-Country Asylum Rule

Statement

Date: July 15, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, today released a statement following an announcement by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Justice (DOJ) that they will issue a third-country asylum rule.

"Smugglers and criminals have been exploiting loopholes in our immigration laws at the expense of vulnerable populations. In issuing this rule, the Trump Administration is helping to restore integrity to our asylum system, and protecting those with true asylum claims. Congressional action is still needed to address the root causes of the border crisis: Democrats need to get serious about closing these loopholes and ensure the administration has the resources that it needs to enforce our immigration laws."
