Rep. Stevens Slams Trump Administration's Continued Legal Assault on Americans' Health Care

Press Release

Date: July 9, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Today, as the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals hears oral arguments in the Texas v. U.S. lawsuit, Rep. Stevens responded to the Trump Administration's latest efforts to strike down protections for people with pre-existing conditions as well as all of the benefits and protections provided by the Affordable Care Act. Rep. Stevens highlighted the devastating impact that the lawsuit could have on hard-working families throughout Michigan and across the country.

"In 2018, Michiganders made clear that they want a Congress committed to defending their access to quality, affordable health care," said Rep. Stevens. "While the Trump Administration goes to court to destroy protections for people with pre-existing conditions, I voted on Day One to throw the full legal weight of the House of Representatives against this disastrous lawsuit. We are honoring our promise to the American people to safeguard protections for pre-existing conditions and the health care of all Americans. If the Trump Administration's lawsuit is successful, tens of millions of Americans could lose their health coverage, including hundreds of thousands of Michiganders living with pre-existing conditions. Michiganders deserve better."

If the Trump Administration's lawsuit to fully dismantle the Affordable Care Act is successful, the health and financial wellbeing of Michigan families will be devastated:

527,600 -- Number of Michigan children who have pre-existing conditions and will lose their protections.
720,000 -- Number of Michiganders who could lose all health care coverage.
73,000 -- Young Michiganders under age 26 who could lose the ability to remain on their parents' insurance.
$3,357 -- Amount of a new "Age Tax" that insurance companies could charge Michiganders over the age of 50.
3,547,000 -- Number of Michiganders who could face lifetime and annual limits on coverage.
219,996 -- Number of Michiganders who will pay more for coverage without access to health insurance affordability tax credits.
203,864 -- Number of Michigan seniors who could have to pay more for their prescription drugs.
"I came to Congress to fight for hard-working families and I will continue to stand strong against these outrageous attempts to take away Michiganders' access to quality, affordable health care," continued Rep. Stevens. "The House is working tirelessly to strengthen protections for people with pre-existing conditions and lower health costs and prescription drug prices. Congress will continue to deliver on our comprehensive agenda to lower health costs and prescription drug prices for seniors and families across America, and ensure that health care remains a right for all."
