Committee Passes Walberg-Backed Legislation to Combat Illegal Robocalls, Promote Energy Cybersecurity

The House Energy and Commerce Committee yesterday passed two bipartisan bills co-sponsored by Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07), advancing the legislation to the House floor for further consideration. H.R. 3375, the Stopping Bad Robocalls Act, takes a comprehensive approach to empowering consumers and cracking down on illegal robocallers. The bipartisan bill includes a provision Walberg helped author to address one-ring scams, an increasingly common robocall scheme that tricks consumers into paying huge hidden fees on return phone calls.

"Robocalls have metastasized from an unwelcomed annoyance to a malicious attempt to prey on unsuspecting citizens," said Walberg. "With the Stopping Bad Robocalls Act, the days of illegal robocalls are numbered. I am pleased to have worked on this legislation in a bipartisan way--including efforts to combat the costly one-ring scam--and I look forward to getting it across the finish line on the House floor."

The Energy and Commerce Committee also voted to advance another Walberg-backed bill, H.R. 362, the Energy Emergency Leadership Act. Introduced with Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL), this bipartisan bill recognizes the important mission of bolstering our cybersecurity at the Department of Energy to more effectively respond to these growing threats to energy security.

"I am proud to see the Energy Emergency Leadership Act get approved today with unanimous support," said Walberg. "We can't take any chances with the security and integrity of our energy infrastructure, and this bipartisan legislation will better equip the Department of Energy to ward off constant cyberattacks against the grid."
