Statement

Date: July 3, 2019
Location: San Mateo, CA

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) released the following statement today in response to the shooting at The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno on July 2nd, 2019.

"I was saddened and shocked to learn about another shooting in one of our communities yesterday, this time at a mall in San Bruno where hundreds of people were peacefully shopping, eating or enjoying a movie. I am relieved that nobody died and my heart goes out to the two victims who are still hospitalized and to all the people who were traumatized by this senseless act of violence. I want to thank San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini and the 100 first responders from the Peninsula for their swift response and continued pursuit of two suspects allegedly responsible for this horrific crime," Rep. Speier said. "There are many things we do not yet know about this incident as the investigation is ongoing. What we do know is that the toll gun violence extracts from our communities reaches far beyond those who bear the physical scars of such attacks. Whatever the motive may be, the fact is it doesn't matter without the means. Thoughts and prayers aren't enough, Congress has a duty to act on commonsense gun reform. If we can prevent even one individual who shouldn't be able to purchase a gun from gaining access to a deadly weapon, we can save countless people from the life-altering aftermath that follows the destructive path of a bullet."
