Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Denounces the Racist Tweets from The President and Calls for A Resolution of Condemnation by The United States Congress

Statement

Date: July 15, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, senior Member of the House Committees on Budget, Judiciary and Homeland Security released this statement following the President's racist statements, made over the weekend on social media:

"The United States Congress has protocols to ensure that, even during the most heated debates, the pillars of dignity and respect are adhered to. For example, when one member of Congress says something that is inappropriate, there is a process by which words are removed from the discourse, i.e., taken down. This occurs after members agree, jointly, that words should be "taken down." This is done out of a symbolic respect for civility in discourse and debate in the People's house.

"Which is why the President's statements over the weekend, on Twitter, are especially troubling. It is hateful and shameful that the President of the United States would tell anyone to go back to their own country, let alone say this to many sitting members of Congress. This was a calculated attempt for the president to do what he does best: traffic in fear and loathing. He makes these comments to provoke others, and to bait his so-called "base." All these comments do is instigate violence and divisiveness in America. This is not a duty of the president.

"The President's words must immediately be taken down and he must face a Resolution of Condemnation. Short of impeachment, the Congress must take action, even though such action may play into the President's playbook, which is to distract, demean and destroy all of the values we hold dear as America. I love America and I recognize that patriots come from all racial and religious backgrounds. That is the greatest statement made by Americans to the world: that we live harmoniously, despite our differences. I, for one, will not stand silently to allow one man to literally blow up this unique and special experiment. The president must face a Resolution of Condemnation from the United States Congress.

"I thank the Speaker sincerely for her letter and I look forward to working with her on this Resolution of Condemnation."
