Hoyer Statement on Passage of the National Defense Authorization Act

Statement

Date: July 12, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020:

"I'm pleased that the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 today, which will strengthen our national security and support the men and women who serve our nation.

"As a long-time champion of the military installations in my district, including Pax River, Indian Head, and Webster Field, I understand the important role they play in our national defense, and I'm pleased this bill supports their mission. The legislation includes a 3.1% cost of living adjustment for service members, provides paid family leave for federal employees, and prohibits the Trump Administration from eliminating the Office of Personnel Management. Additionally, the bill prohibits funding for the President's unnecessary border wall, requires the Department of Defense to make a plan to respond to climate change, and prohibits funding for President Trump's discriminatory transgender ban.

"I was proud to bring this critical legislation to the House Floor and vote for passage to ensure a strong national defense, provide our troops with a raise, and defend our interests abroad."
