Rep. Zeldin's Proposal to Expand Veterans Homeownership Opportunities Signed Into Law

Press Release

On June 25, 2019, Congressman Lee Zeldin's (R, NY-1) Flexible VA Loan Guarantee Act to expand veterans homeownership opportunities, which passed the House on May 14, 2019 and the Senate on June 12, 2019, as part of the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019 (H.R. 299), was signed into law by the President.

Rep. Zeldin's Flexible VA Loan Guarantee Act would eliminate the loan limit or "maximum guarantee amount" of a loan that the Veterans Affairs Administration (VA) can guarantee for a veteran, providing the VA with the flexibility to determine the appropriate limit for individual veterans loans and expand access to homeownership in areas like Long Island where real estate values are higher.

The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act expands treatment coverage for those affected by Agent Orange from not only those who served on the ground, as federal law currently stands, but to those service members who were affected while serving at sea.

"These brave service members have put their lives on the line for our great nation, and they have earned nothing less than the highest quality care and our full support," said Congressman Zeldin. "In addition to finally expanding treatment coverage for those affected by Agent Orange from not only those who served on the ground, but also those serving at sea, this new law includes my proposal, the Flexible VA Loan Guarantee Act, which expands veterans' opportunity for homeownership, by eliminating the loan limit the VA can guarantee. This is especially critical in communities on Long Island where the median home price is higher. Our nation's veterans are the reason we have the opportunity to live in the greatest country in the world, and this law is an important part of ensuring they have the opportunity to live out the very American dream they fought so valiantly to protect."
