Rep. Torres Small Statement on Final Passage of DHS Supplemental Funding Bill

Statement

Date: June 27, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small (NM-2) released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 3401, the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for Humanitarian Assistance and Security at the Southern Border Act of 2019:

"With each passing day, the burden on our border communities grows as their limited resources are further stretched beyond capacity. Today's bipartisan vote is the first step towards ensuring those border communities, churches, and nonprofits that have stepped up to meet the needs of migrants and address this crisis are repaid for their work. The additional money to hire 30 immigration judge teams will help fix the already looming backlog in our asylum system. The funds set aside for transportation of migrants from border patrol stations will aid in alleviating overcrowding and expedite processing. But I remind my colleagues that the work is not over. As long as we continue to see an influx of families voluntarily presenting at our borders, we cannot ignore the needs of the CBP agents, border communities, and children who will live the day-to-day consequences of any future inaction."
