Statement By Congressman WM. Lacy Clay (D) Missouri Regarding U.S. Supreme Court Decision To Stop Trump Administration From Adding Citizenship Question To 2020 Cenus

Statement

Date: July 2, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

"Last week's decision by the Supreme Court affirms the constitutional mandate that every person in America counts, and every person deserves to be counted.

The high court's rejection of the Trump Administration's deceptive and deceitful attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census affirms that Secretary Ross lied to the court, lied to Congress and lied to the American people. He should resign.

The Trump Administration's attempt to add a citizenship question had absolutely nothing to do with enforcing the Voting Rights Act. But it had everything to do with increasing the undercount of persons of color and new immigrants to deprive them of federal funding over the next decade and to suppress their political representation at the federal, state and local levels.

The 2020 Census should proceed without delay or further deceptions by the Administration."
