Congresswoman Tlaib: Supreme Court Puts Finger on Electoral Scales in Favor of Republican Gerrymanderers

Statement

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib released the following statement regarding the United States Supreme Court's decision on partisan gerrymandering:

"Every resident in this country should have fair representation in their government. The Supreme Court's decision on partisan gerrymandering is extremely disappointing and cuts our democracy short of its full power to be an equal avenue of access for every person in this country. Partisan gerrymandering continues to poison our country and has created a system where residents are undervalued and disregarded. The Court's decision today to not weigh in allows Republicans to continue to gerrymander. In my home state of Michigan, GOP operatives called Democratic-affiliated Michiganders "Dem garbage' during the last redistricting process. This type of rhetoric should have no place in our government. We must get rid of partisan gerrymandering -- period. It is a shame that this Court has continuously tarnished our democracy, including the gutting of the Voting Rights Act, Citizens United, and now refusing to ensure there is equal representation across this country.

"At the beginning of the 116th Congress, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act, which contains provisions to create independent redistricting commissions. The Senate must take action on H.R. 1 and we must continue to work to eliminate partisan gerrymandering at every level of government."
