Rep. Doggett's Reaction to the Latest Development in Trump's Taxes

Date: June 4, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), a senior member on the Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement after this afternoon's news of the Department of Justice's opinion refusing to turn over President Trump's tax returns:

"What else but excuses could be expected from an Attorney General, who has been acting as the taxpayer-financed personal attorney of President Trump? "Shall' still means "shall,' despite 33 pages of legalese. The only reason Secretary Mnuchin sought this opinion was because he didn't like the previous one produced by career IRS employees, who rightfully concluded that the returns must be produced. This comes from the same office, which, in prior years, opined that a sitting president cannot be indicted--an opinion that has handcuffed Special Counsel Mueller from indicting Trump. This is simply the latest chapter in Trump's total obstruction strategy, underscoring the need for Democrats to finally take bold action."
