Castro Statement on Decision to Cut Aid to Northern Triangle

Press Release

Date: June 18, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Aid

Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and a member of the House Intelligence and Education and Labor Committees, released the following statement today in response to the State Department's announcement yesterday that they will move forward with the President's reckless order to cut off a significant portion of our aid to the Northern Triangle:

"A presidential tantrum--once again--is limiting our nation's ability to address the conditions that force so many refugees to flee to the United States. President Trump understands that development assistance is in our interests and that cutting aid will only further destabilize the region. Baiting governments to possibly use force against their own people to prevent migration is an immoral and illogical strategy. Moreover, this President is intent to negate the humanity and dignity of migrants at every turn. His decision to cut off aid to the Northern Triangle will only make a dire situation much worse."
