House Democrats Propose Amendment to Senate Emergency Humanitarian Supplemental

House Democrats, led by House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY-17), today introduced an amendment strengthening the Senate's emergency humanitarian supplemental by making critical improvements to support children and families.

The humanitarian emergency at our southern border is an affront to American values and requires immediate action. The House amendment makes the Senate bill better by expanding funding for key priorities, like compassionate processing and support for nonprofits, and improving the care of migrant children and families, through stronger safety standards and enhanced accountability.

"With the federal government stretched beyond the breaking point, we must act to send necessary resources to the border. The heartbreaking images and stories from the border make clear that we must combine that funding with protections for the rights and dignity of migrants," Chairwoman Lowey said. "This amendment improves the Senate's bill and delivers urgently needed care for migrant children and families. After the House passes it, the Senate should take it up and send it to the President for his signature."
