Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after voting against H.R. 3401, House Democrat Border Supplemental Appropriations Act:
"In May, the Trump administration requested $4.5 billion in emergency funding to provide our border enforcement agencies with drastically needed resources to address the humanitarian crisis at the southern border. Unfortunately, House Democrats have refused for weeks to provide the necessary funding and instead introduced a partisan bill that does not nearly go far enough to address this crisis. This bill restricts the Department of Homeland Security's authority to detail employees to help address the surge of immigrants and imposes politically-motivated restrictions on the Department of Health and Human Service's and the Administration's ability to respond to this crisis. I hope House Democrats will stop these petty political games and work with Republicans on a solution we can all agree on.
Note: H.R. 3401 lacks vital resources needed to address the crisis at the border such as funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement pay shortfall or overtime; funding to investigate human traffickers smuggling unrelated children; funding for Department of Defense operating expenses for Active Duty and National Guard personnel providing aviation support, medical assistance, and mobile surveillance on the border; and funding for the DOJ to support immigration judge teams, courtrooms, and equipment.
