Today, Rep. Joe Cunningham introduced legislation authorizing a Coast Guard Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) program at Mt. Pleasant's Lucy Beckham High School, which will open next fall. Majority Whip Clyburn was an original cosponsor of the legislation. The Coast Guard can only establish new JROTC programs through authorization from Congress, and there are currently only two Coast Guard JROTC programs in the country.
"The Coast Guard JROTC program is designed to teach young people critical life skills like leadership, discipline, confidence, and integrity. These skills will serve them well in whatever path they follow after graduation," said Rep. Joe Cunningham. "I'm proud to help give Mount Pleasant high schoolers the opportunity to learn these skills for life and become better, more engaged citizens."
