Congressman Albio Sires' Statement About Aid Cuts to Central America

Statement

Date: June 19, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Aid

Today, Congressman Sires released the following statement regarding the Trump Administration's decision to move ahead with funding cuts to foreign assistance programs intended to address the root causes of migration from Central America:

"President Trump's decision to cut funding for poverty and violence-reducing programs that mitigate the root causes of migration proves that this policy is purely about satisfying extreme elements in his political base. This illogical decision, made without a serious assessment of the impact of U.S. assistance programs, further endangers the lives of thousands who are migrating northward to escape difficult conditions at home. Since the initial announcement of the proposed cuts in March, the administration has demonstrated a blatant disregard for the will of the American people and of Congress, conveying a misguided belief that it can arbitrarily deploy taxpayer resources to advance its political objectives. I am working with my colleagues in Congress on a bipartisan basis to push back against this reckless behavior and we will continue to put forth meaningful solutions to the economic and political challenges in the Northern Triangle countries, despite this administration's counterproductive policies."
