Today, the House Financial Services Committee held a hearing to receive testimony from the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary, Ben Carson.

The Republican leader of the Committee, Patrick McHenry (NC-10), applauded Secretary Carson's efforts to bring much needed reform to the agency, including "modernizing old programs, updating regulations, and knocking down barriers to individual and local investment." Specifically, the Ranking Member highlighted the Secretary's work as chair of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council "to help distressed communities stimulate development and entrepreneurship," through tools like Opportunity Zones, established by the Republican Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

The Ranking Member went on to urge the agency's swift movement on the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule and the Fair Housing Act's Disparate Impact Standard, both of which "will go a long way in helping communities and consumers." Ranking Member McHenry sent a letter to Secretary Carson last week on these pending regulations, and others, that will "expand housing opportunities and increase fairness in the housing market."
