Chairman Thompson Statement on Conclusion of Mueller Investigation

Statement

Date: May 29, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the conclusion of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation:

"Robert Mueller's parting remarks to the American people were a warning. After more than two years of honorable service as Special Counsel, he painted a disturbing picture of Russian efforts to interfere in our 2016 elections and rightfully observed that the issue deserves the attention of every American.

"Election security has been a priority for House Democrats since 2016. The House took critical action toward preserving the integrity of our democratic institutions when it passed H.R. 1 earlier this year, and it is long past time for Senate leadership to allow a vote on the bill.

"In the meantime, I urge House Republicans to join House Democrats in supporting H.R. 2660, the Election Security Act, my stand-alone election security legislation that will ensure the full resources of the Federal government are brought to bear as our State and local election officials work to secure their networks from sophisticated foreign adversaries. The 2020 elections are less than 18 months away. The time is now to give Americans the confidence in their vote they rightfully deserve."
