H.R. 6 would also provide a pathway to citizenship to nearly 2.5 million immigrants
Washington, DC -- Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-13) today joined House Democrats in passing H.R. 6, The American Dream and Promise Act, a bill protecting nearly 2.5 million immigrants from deportation. Congressman Ryan voted in favor of the bill which creates a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers and recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED). TPS allows foreign nationals who are unable to safely return to their home countries due to armed conflict, natural disaster, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions to remain in the United States until it is safe to return. Over 50,000 Haitians were granted TPS in the aftermath of the catastrophic 2010 earthquake, and DED allowed 4,000 Liberian nationals displaced by civil war and the Ebola crisis to live in the U.S. without fear of removal.

"For years, the Trump Administration has needlessly attacked DACA, TPS, and DED recipients--ending their legal protections without warning and throwing them into uncertainty. These immigrants faced the threat of being forced to leave the country that had sheltered them for decades, and in some cases the only country they had ever known. Today, House Democrats changed that. I am proud to join my colleagues in passing historic legislation that would provide DREAMers and TPS/DED recipients with a pathway to citizenship. They have built lives here: getting an education, raising families, contributing to our economy, and enriching our communities. The United States is their home, and the Trump Administration was wrong to see it any other way. We are a compassionate nation, and this bill reaffirms our commitment to being a humanitarian refuge for those in need," said Congressman Ryan.
