Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) issued the following statement in response to Special Counsel Mueller's press conference today in summary of his investigation of President Trump:

"Special Counsel Mueller was confirmed unanimously twice in the Senate and has since benefitted from overwhelming bipartisan support," said Rep. Richmond. "Let me be clear that Mr. Mueller is a lifelong Republican who was appointed to conduct this investigation by a Republican and was ultimately overseen by another Republican. This investigation is serious constitutional matter, which is why it is imperative that we take the contents of his report seriously.

"Special Counsel Robert Mueller has dedicated his time and fervent efforts conducting this investigation and I applaud his work in doing so. At his press conference today, we heard Special Counsel Mueller make several clear points: The Russian government attacked our democracy and interfered with our election, the president repeatedly attempted to obstruct the investigation into that attack, and Special Counsel Mueller's decision not to indict the president on obstruction of justice relied on his opinion that the Department of Justice policy prevented him from doing so.

"Special Counsel Mueller also made clear today that it is up to Congress to take further action. It is the responsibility of Congress to respond to the numerous cases of misconduct described in the Mueller report and to ensure that no one is above the rule of law. The American people and international community deserve to know the truth."
